How It Works
Understand the science behind RPM calculations — from engine fundamentals to drivetrain mathematics.
Understanding RPM
RPM — Revolutions Per Minute — measures how many complete rotations a shaft or object makes in 60 seconds. In a car, the tachometer shows the crankshaft's RPM.
The crankshaft converts the up-and-down motion of pistons into rotational motion. This rotation is then transferred through the transmission, driveshaft, differential, and finally to the wheels.
At each stage, the speed is modified by gear ratios. Understanding these ratios is key to calculating how fast the wheels — and therefore the vehicle — are moving at any given RPM.
Step-by-Step: RPM to Speed
Start with Engine RPM
The tachometer in your vehicle shows this value. It's the rotational speed of the crankshaft — for example, 3,000 RPM at highway cruise.
Apply Gear Ratio
The transmission divides the crankshaft speed. A ratio of 3.5:1 means the crankshaft rotates 3.5 times for every one rotation reaching the driveshaft output.
Apply Axle Ratio
The differential further reduces speed and increases torque. A 3.73:1 axle ratio multiplied by the transmission ratio gives the overall gear ratio.
Account for Tire Size
The tire's rolling diameter determines how far the vehicle travels per wheel revolution. Larger tires cover more ground per spin — lowering effective RPM at a given speed.
Calculate Speed
Combine all factors: Speed = (RPM × Tire Diameter) ÷ (Overall Gear Ratio × 336). The result is your vehicle's speed in mph.
Verify & Use
Cross-check with your speedometer or GPS. Small differences are normal due to tire wear and inflation. Now you can calculate for any scenario.
